Basic Bio

Wesley "Wes" Wales Anderson was born in Houston, Texas on May 1, 1969. His mother Texas Ann (maiden name: Burroughs), worked as an archaeologist and real estate agent, and his father, Melver Leonard Anderson, worked in advertising and PR. Wes also has two brothers, named Eric and Mel.

The divorce of Anderson's parents when he was a young child made an understandably large impact on him. It is thought that this event has served as the main inspiration for many of his stories. Dysfuntional or broken families are often at the core of his films.

Wes Anderson attended the University of Texas in Austin, where he majored in philosophy. It was there that he met Owen Wilson. Almost as soon as Anderson and Wilson started up their friendship, they began making short films together. One of those was Bottle Rocket, starring Owen and his brother Luke Wilson. When Bottle Rocket was screened at the Sundance Film Festival, it was so well-received that Anderson scored funding to create the full-length version.

Although Bottle Rocket was not commercially successful upon its release, it gained a cult following. Among its fans was none other than famed director Martin Scorsese.

Anderson became much more successful with the release of Rushmore, and he's been making hits ever since.
